"Before the explosion and fire, Deepwater Horizon was a Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit owned by Transocean and under contract to BP Exploration and Production. Twice the size of a football field, it was built in South Korea in 2001. The rig, floating on giant pontoons and moored to the sea floor by several large anchors, was capable of drilling in water up to 8000 feet deep. It had been operating in its current location since January 2010, approximately 51 miles southeast of Venice, Louisianna."
"The rig was in the final phases of drilling a well in which casing is cemented in place, reinforcing the well. This is a delicate process as there is the possibility of a blowout, the uncontrolled release of formation fluids from the well. On April 20, 2010, an explosion occurred on the rig and it caught fire. Conflicting reports stated that at least eleven people were missing after the incident. Seven workers were airlifted to the Naval air station in New Orleans and were then taken to the hospital. Support ships sprayed the rig with water in an unsuccessful bid to douse the flames. Deepwater Horizon sank on April 22, 2010, in water approximately 5,000 feet (1,500 m) deep, and has been located resting on the seafloor approximately 1,300 feet (400 m) northwest of the well."
