Hitte in de Palo Duro Canyon

Vandaag zijn we dus op bezoek geweest in een State Park ten zuiden van Amarillo, 'The Palo Duro Canyon'.

"Palo Duro Canyon is a canyon system of the Caprock Escarpment in the Panhandle of Texas (USA). As the second largest canyon in the United States, it is roughly 193 km (120 mi) long and has an average width of 10 km (6.2 mi), but reaches a width of 32 km (20 mi) at places. Its depth is approximately around 250 m (820 ft) but in some locations it can increase up to 304 m (997 ft). Palo Duro Canyon has been named "The Grand Canyon of Texas," both for its size and for the dramatic geological features, including the multicolored layers of rock and steep mesa walls similar to those in the Grand Canyon.

The canyon was formed by the Prairie Dog Town Fork Red River which initially winds along the level surface of the Llano Estacado of West Texas then suddenly and dramatically runs off the Caprock Escarpment. Water erosion over the millennia has shaped the canyon's geological formations.

Notable canyon formations include caves and hoodoos. One of the best known and the major signature feature of the canyon is the Lighthouse Peak. A multi-use six-mile round trip loop trail is dedicated to the formation. The middle portion of the trail can be hot with little shade, and hikers should take plenty of water."

Ik was er al een paar keer eerder geweest, dus het was niet helemaal nieuw, al hebben we nu op het einde de "Lighthouse Trail" gelopen. Dat is op en neer circa 10 kilometer. Dat klinkt niet zo ver, maar door ruig terrein, in een diepe vallei onder de verschroeiende Texaanse zon (ca 90°F), was het toch behoorlijk afzien. Roel en ik hebben het gered tot de Lighthouse steenformatie, Ewoud moest vanwege zijn herstellende enkel eerder stoppen. Op de terugweg kreeg ik last van enige oververhitting; kippenvel, licht duizelig en meer van dat. Maar we hebben met de tong op de schoenen de auto weer gehaald! Stoer huh?
